There are two kinds of people in October: the ones who want apple cider, cozy sweaters and a cute pumpkin patch AND the ones who willingly pay strangers to chase them through the dark with a chainsaw. 

Personally, I’m a little bit of both. 🍎 🧛‍♂️ 

I love a soft fall day, but once the sun goes down, I want the kind of haunted house that makes the entire group grab onto each other and immediately regret acting brave in the parking lot. Living near Chicago means we have a surprising number of places where that can happen.

Illinois and Wisconsin are packed with haunted houses, but they are definitely not all the same. Some rely on huge movie-quality sets. Some trap you in pitch-black hallways. Others send you into the woods, where every sound suddenly feels personal.

So, instead of giving you one long list of places that all claim to be “the scariest,” I broke these down by what each one does best. Whether you want nonstop jump scares, a full Halloween date night or something so intense that you may need a quiet ride home, these are the haunted houses worth adding to your 2026 Spook-tober plans. 🎃

Best Haunted Houses in Illinois

1. HellsGate Haunted House — Lockport

Best for: A complete horror adventure, not just a walkthrough

HellsGate is the one I would choose if I wanted the whole night to feel like a scary movie.

You do not simply walk through a warehouse and leave. First, you have to travel through zombie-infested woods and across the Lost Souls Cemetery to reach a hidden, multi-level mansion. Inside are secret passages, giant slides and the kind of characters who make you question whether splitting up from your group would actually be less stressful.

The setting is what makes this one special. That walk through the woods builds the anxiety before you even reach the house, and the mansion feels more like a place you discovered than an attraction you drove to. The cast also includes characters carrying on the legacy of the former Statesville Haunted Prison.

There is even a hidden key somewhere inside. Find it, and your ticket is free. Personally, I would be focused on finding the exit, but I respect the ambition.

Know before you go: Tickets are capped on some nights and can sell out, so this is not the place to make a last-minute decision from the car.

2. Massacre Haunted House — Montgomery

Best for: Massive sets, elaborate effects and indoor scares

Massacre is for anyone who wants to be scared and visually impressed at the same time.

The attraction covers more than 35,000 square feet, with over 40 rooms and multiple experiences under one roof. For 2026, Massacre replaced its former 3D attraction with a new 3,000-square-foot area called The Asylum. Expect abandoned-patient energy, immersive rooms and live actors who are not interested in respecting your personal space.

Massacre has a reputation for enormous props, sophisticated animatronics and simulated experiences that make the building feel much larger than it looks from outside. It is entirely indoors, which also makes it a smart choice for one of those cold, wet October nights when walking through a muddy field sounds more miserable than fun.

This is probably my top recommendation for a group with mixed scare tolerances. The nervous people will scream, while the detail-obsessed people will still have plenty to look at between jump scares.

3. Disturbia Haunted House — Downers Grove

Best for: A strong all-around haunt without a long drive from Chicago

Disturbia may not have a real prison or a mansion hidden in the woods, but it does the traditional haunted-house formula extremely well.

The rooms are detailed, the effects are polished and the actors keep the scares moving. It is the kind of place where you barely recover from one room before something else is waiting around the next corner. Reviews especially praise the actors inside and outside the attraction, which matters because a gorgeous haunted house can still feel empty without a committed cast.

For anyone coming from Chicago or the near western suburbs, Disturbia is also one of the easier options on this list. You can have dinner nearby, go through the haunt and make it home without turning the evening into a full road trip.

4. Basement of the Dead — Aurora

Best for: Loud, dark and claustrophobic horror

Basement of the Dead is not subtle. It is noisy, chaotic, cramped and designed to keep your nervous system working overtime.

The main attraction sends you through the corridors of an abandoned underground laboratory, followed by Shattered 3D, where fluorescent visuals and 3D glasses make it hard to trust the walls—or your own balance. If tight spaces, darkness and sudden noise are the things that get to you, this may end up being the scariest stop on the list.

This is less about a slow, creeping sense of dread and more about being attacked from every direction. You will probably leave laughing, slightly disoriented and blaming whoever convinced the group to go first.

2026 opening date: September 18

5. Realm of Terror — Round Lake Beach

Best for: Actors who get very close

Some haunted houses depend heavily on machines. Realm of Terror feels frightening because the performers make the experience personal.

The approximately 30-minute walkthrough is dark, graphic and actor-driven. The rooms change quickly, the lighting works against you and the scare team is very comfortable invading the little bubble of safety you thought you had. Realm was ranked No. 1 in Illinois by HauntedIllinois.com and No. 3 in Chicagoland by Haunted House Chicago for the 2025 season.

It is also attached to Kristof’s Entertainment Center, so your group can add bowling, arcade games, mini golf, food or drinks. That makes it a good option when not everyone wants the entire night to revolve around screaming.

For anyone who loves the sets but cannot deal with live actors, Realm offers a special No Actor Night on October 29. The lights, sound and effects still run, but nobody jumps out at you. I would still be suspicious of every corner, but at least you can breathe.

6. 13th Floor Haunted House Chicago — Schiller Park

Best for: A polished Chicago date night with extra activities

13th Floor is one of the most recognizable haunted-house names in the country, and the Chicago location is an easy choice when you want something close, polished and reliably entertaining.

The 2026 storylines include Black Hollow Institute, where human experiments have gone very wrong, and a demonic manor centered around Cordelia Blackmore. There are also mini escape games and two secret bars for guests 21 and older, so it is easy to turn the visit into more than a single walkthrough.

I would classify 13th Floor as more cinematic and fun than emotionally devastating. That is not a criticism. Sometimes you want to scream, take cute Halloween pictures and still have enough composure left for drinks afterward.

Best Haunted Houses in Wisconsin

7. Abandoned Haunted House Complex — Mount Pleasant

Best for: The strongest Wisconsin option within reach of Chicago

If you are willing to cross the Wisconsin border, Abandoned is the place I would send you first.

One ticket includes three full-length haunted houses lasting more than an hour altogether. Ambush is built around darkness and sudden startle scares. Hysteria is more interactive and disorienting. Stalker takes the fear outdoors, where the darkness and open space make it much harder to predict what is coming.

There is also an optional interactive experience called Inner Fear and axe throwing for anyone who apparently still has energy afterward. The complex has food, drinks, roaming entertainment and burn barrels, so the night feels more like a Halloween event than a quick walkthrough.

Abandoned was ranked No. 1 by Haunted House Chicago in 2023 and has stayed within its top three for five consecutive seasons. It is also conveniently located between the Chicago and Milwaukee areas, near Racine and Kenosha.

8. The Hill Has Eyes — Franklin

Best for: Outdoor scares and a chilly fall-night atmosphere

The Hill Has Eyes is a sprawling Milwaukee-area experience offering four haunts with one admission. This is the kind of attraction that benefits from cold air, dark woods and that eerie silence you only notice right before somebody starts running toward you.

Outdoor haunts hit differently because they remove the comfort of knowing where the walls are. The space feels less controlled, the shadows look deeper and every noise behind you sounds suspicious. If you prefer atmospheric dread over a brightly lit indoor spectacle, put this one near the top of your Wisconsin list.

Wear shoes that can handle uneven ground and whatever October weather decides to do that night. This is not the occasion for a cute boot you have never worn before.

9. Burial Chamber Haunted House Complex — Neenah

Best for: Making an entire night or a weekend out of it.

Burial Chamber is farther from Chicago, but it earns its place because of how much there is to experience once you arrive.

The complex includes four distinct attractions. Adrenaline is the dark haunt. Insanity is interactive. Phobia sends you into haunted woods. Trapped is a buried-alive-style immersive experience, which sounds like a very creative way to discover a fear you did not know you had.

Each attraction takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, giving you a full night rather than a short burst of scares. Burial Chamber is located near Appleton, about 20 minutes north of Oshkosh and roughly three hours from Chicago, so I would pair it with an overnight Wisconsin getaway instead of trying to rush there and back.

10. Terror on the Fox — Green Bay

Best for: A destination haunt and Friday the 13th fans

Terror on the Fox is not the closest option, but its 2026 season gives horror fans a very good reason to make the drive.

The headliner is Jason Universe: Survive the Night, an officially licensed Friday the 13th-inspired walkthrough that puts you face-to-mask with Jason Voorhees. The second attraction, Blackthorn Hollow, takes you into a decaying manor surrounded by the kind of forest where nobody in a horror movie has ever made a sensible decision.

For an additional upgrade, the Director’s Cut experience lets your group choose how Jason attacks his next victims. There is also a secret 21-and-over bar hidden on the grounds, because apparently cocktails taste better when a masked murderer may be nearby.

This one makes the most sense as part of a Green Bay weekend, especially if you want a fall trip that includes more than one activity.

What happened to the Old Joliet Haunted Prison?

If you were expecting to see the Old Joliet Haunted Prison on this list, there is a reason it is missing. The attraction is not expected to return for the 2026 season after the City of Joliet did not renew its lease with the operator.

That is disappointing because the real prison setting gave the experience something a newly constructed haunt simply cannot copy. For now, do not rely on old ticket pages or previous-season information. If anything changes, confirm it through an official 2026 announcement before making plans.

A few tips before you go

● Buy tickets online. Many attractions charge more at the door, and the most popular nights can sell out.

● Go earlier in the season. Late September and early October usually mean lighter crowds than the weekends right before Halloween.

● Do not wear your cutest shoes. Outdoor trails, fog, mud and uneven floors do not care about the outfit.

● Check the rules before bringing younger teens. Several attractions recommend that children under 12 or 13 stay home, and every child handles scares differently.

● Choose upgrades strategically. A fast pass can be worth it on a peak Saturday night. On an early-season Sunday, it may not be necessary.

● Leave the costume masks at home. Most major haunted houses prohibit guests from wearing masks or costumes during regular nighttime events.

Final verdict: Where should you go this Spook-tober?

If I could choose only one Illinois haunt, I would go with HellsGate for the full experience or Massacre for the most impressive indoor horror. For Wisconsin, Abandoned Haunted House Complex gives you the best combination of intensity, length and driving distance from Chicago.

But the honest answer depends on what scares you.

If actors getting close makes your stomach drop, choose Realm of Terror. If tight spaces and sensory overload are your nightmare, Basement of the Dead will probably do the job. If the thought of hearing footsteps behind you in the woods is enough to make you walk faster, head to HellsGate or The Hill Has Eyes.

Whichever one you choose, bring a group you trust. Not because they will protect you—but because you need witnesses when the person who claimed they “never get scared” starts sprinting toward the exit.
