Four Binge-worthy K-Dramas to watch in the new year

‘Something in the Rain’

Starring Korea top stars, Son Ye-Jin and Jung Hae-In, it’s a relatable and heartfelt drama. It follows lead female character Yoon Jin-Ah played by Son Ye-Jin. Yoon Jin-Ah is a thirty something career woman focused on maintaining the status who in her job and dating life. She is working in a corporate office for a coffee corporation overseeing many stores. We see her experience the sexism, sexual harassment, and unfair expectations that women sometimes endure/ experience within the workplace, dating, family, and just life in general. After all of her experiences she has a safe place to discuss it all with her best friend since childhood and her best friend’s younger brother, Seo Joon-Hee, played by Jung Hae-In. An electric romance sparks between Seo Joon-Hee and Son Ye-Jin after years of not seeing one another. This romance is so electric in fact, it leaves you wanting more even after the series completion. This drama offers a perspective of what may happen/ may not happen if you don’t follow your heart and gives relatable experiences, so you don’t feel as alone.

‘Hometown Cha Cha’ taking #2 on our list of must watches before the new year.

Hometown Cha Cha follows lead actress Shin Min-A who plays Yoon Hye-Jin. A fiercely independent dentist who after a disagreement with her greedy soulless boss, moves from the big city to a small town off the coast. While visiting this little slice of Seaside heaven, she becomes more intrigued with the town and its people. She goes through a series of unfortunate events while there and ends up needing the guidance and assistance from lead male actor, Kim Seon-Ho. Kim Seon-Ho plays character and Jack of all trades, Hong Du-Sik. After very little convincing, Yoon Hye-Jin decides to move to the town to open her practice and experiences the town and its quirky residents to the fullest. A romance begins to bid between the two leas characters, and it is a match made in heaven. This series is a romantic dramedy filled with funny relatable moments and tugs on your heartstrings with the relationships within the show. This series offers hope for new beginnings in the new year, whether it’s a new romance, a new career or moving to a new city.

‘WWW: Search’

In this drama lead actors Im Soo-Jung, Lee Da-Hee and Jang Ki-Yong. Im Soo-Jung plays a fierce corporate director, Bae Ta-Mi, at a lead search engine platform named 'Unicon'. She experiences corporate sabotage, backstabbing and is thrown to the wolves. After having enough of the mistreatment, she decides to do something that alters the trajectory of her career all together. Bae Ta-Mi unpredictably ends up joining forces with an unexpected side and teams up with Lee Da-Hee’s character, Cha Hyeon. Bae Ta-Mi and Cha Hyeon, become the bickering and mighty duo you didn’t know you needed. Whilst going through the intensities at 'Unicon', she heads to an arcade to release some energy. Bae Ta-Mi encounters Jang Ki-Yong’s character, Park Morgan. Park Morgan is a twenty something musical engineer and composer at a startup company trying to make deals within the gaming industry. Bae Ta-Mi and Park Morgan’s chemistry ignites and leaves us wanting more each episode. Www: Search gives us strength to stand up to oppressors and injustices. It reminds us that making decisions that are best for us can be hard but can be much needed. It shows us that women can thrive as leaders of mega corporations and that sisterhood is important as well. This drama gives us hope that in case we are still single at any age, we can hope to still find love, especially if it’s played by Jang Ki-Yong.

Taking the final spot we have:

‘True Beauty’

This Webtoon turned dramedy follows lead actors Moon Ga-Young, Hwang In-Youp and ‘Cha Eun-Woo. Moon Ga-Young plays Lim Ju-Kyung, a teenager with bad acne and even worse self-esteem. We follow her painful journey through high school and some grade school flashbacks showing how terrible school bullies can be. After learning how to do makeup well and gaining an inkling of confidence, she changes schools and begins making friends. Lim Ju- Kyung keeps having run-ins with two boys who cannot stand one another, Lee Su-Ho and played by Cha Eun-Woo and Han Seo-Jun played by Hwang In-Youp. Navigating the fear of being exposed and her developing feelings for Lee Su-Ho, Lim Ju-Kyung is torn. This drama offers insight into the importance of self-love and believing in yourself, even the face of adversity. A great message to start the new year with.
